Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is named after the mineral springs that flow down from the melting snow packs of Pikes Peak. The waters are known for their different flavors, which are affected by the presence of minerals where the water surfaces. In the previous century, Manitou Springs was a popular residential destination for those in poor health — the crisp, clean air and mineral waters were thought to be physically and mentally restorative.

Nature, history and the arts are central components to the Manitou Springs lifestyle. The area is home to many campgrounds, horse ranches, hiking trails, natural sites, plus museums, galleries and theatre houses. Notable natural resources include Pikes Peak, the rock formations of the Garden of the Gods and Cave of the Winds. Locals and visitors can explore natural history and the area’s Native American heritage at destinations like Cliff Dwellings Museum, Garden of the Gods Visitors and Nature Center, May Natural History Museum and Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site.

Manitou Springs’ scenic location and refreshing spirit has long appealed to artists and writers. The community’s first artist studio, Craftwood Arts & Crafts Studio, was established in the early years of the 20th century. In more recent years, groups like the Commonwheel Artists Cooperative and the Business of Art Center have provided support, education and exhibition space for local artists. Several galleries in town also display and sell original work from local artists. Arts performances and shows are hosted by Iron Springs Chateau, Manitou Art Theater and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

Historic Old Colorado City in Colorado Springs is also just a short drive from Manitou Springs. Old Colorado City, a preferred destination for an afternoon of relaxed shopping, features historic architecture, specialty shops, art galleries and fine restaurants.
